Back in 1957, the brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni presented the first prototype of this extraordinary cantilever chair, which the Italian family business Zanotta has been producing since 1970. The Mezzardo is considered an exemplary example of radical design; a movement that reached its peak in Italy in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With unconventional design language and new materials, the designers rejected established taste and design, which was only intended to stimulate consumption. The shape of the seat is based on a simple tractor seat, which is attached to a curved support rod made of chrome-plated steel with a large wing screw. This is only supported by a wooden foot. Because the construction rocks slightly with every movement and the shaped seat, the Mezzardo offers pleasant seating comfort despite hard materials.
