The Ghashghai or Qashqai are Turkic-speaking nomadic tribes who live mainly in the Fars province in southwestern Iran, especially around the city of Shiraz. In addition to carpets, they produce a wide variety of flat-woven kilims, which are made using the characteristic slit weaving technique. This technique is characterized by the creation of small slits in the fabric, especially when changing colors.
The slit weaving technique shapes the structure and aesthetics of the motifs, which are usually geometric - typical for kilims. The nomads work without fixed designs or templates.
