Flat-woven rugs have been woven in homes for a long time and are available throughout Iran. Some of these are kilim, flat-woven wool rugs with the typical "kilim slit". Others are sumak, flat-woven rugs with an embroidered look on the front and loose ends on the back. Originally, kilims and sumaks were multifunctional, used in front of doors, to cover camels or horses, or as tent roofs, to cover dining tables, or to sleep on. These rugs have been well maintained or refurbished.
