Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, born on June 24, 1888 in Utrecht, was a Dutch architect, designer and member of the artist group De Stijl. The representatives of De Stijl ("The Style"), also known as Neoplasticism, advocated a reduction to the essentials of form and color; they simplified visual compositions through vertical and horizontal lines and used clearly defined primary colors. The strictly geometric shapes characterize his designs and are also clearly recognizable in the Utrecht armchair, which he designed in 1935 for the Dutch department store Metz and Co. In addition to the armchair, the elegantly curved three-seater sofa is also part of the Utrecht collection. The sofa on offer has been professionally reupholstered with a dark green Kvadrat fabric. It is in very good condition.
