MEWA Landi chair by Hans Coray in red vintage

They had to be new in every respect - that was the requirement of the Bauhaus student Hans Fischli when he asked Hans Coray in 1938 to design models for the official chair for the Swiss National Exhibition in 1939. One of the two prototypes by the Zurich designer was finally realized: a chair made entirely of aluminum with a clear, two-part structure consisting of a base frame under a separate three-dimensionally shaped seat shell. The appearance of these was characterized by the characteristic 91 punched holes, which not only gave the chair a visual lightness, but also saved weight. After a production interruption during the Second World War and the period of spiritual national defense, various companies sold the design classic, each slightly modifying the appearance. Before production was transferred to Vitra in 2014, they were manufactured by Westermann AG, Zanotta and the Wädenswil metal goods factory. The latter began producing under the abbreviation MEWA in 1950, which was used to label many items, including the Landi chair. From 1962, the MEWA chair was produced in a slightly modified form with six holes instead of seven. The chair on offer dates from the production period between 1963 and 1998 and is in the rare color red. It is stackable, weatherproof and very light at just under three kilograms. The chair is in good to very good condition.
